University Hospital Diabetes Services offers you a comprehensive program staffed by registered dietitians and nurse educators who have all earned certification in diabetes education. Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the pancreas either does not produce enough insulin or produces ineffective insulin so the body cannot use food properly. This results in high blood sugar which can lead to severe medical complications. The good news is that diabetes can be controlled. By properly balancing food, exercise and medication, the risk of diabetes-related complications can be reduced drastically.
University's diabetes program has received the certificate of recognition from the American Diabetes Association. Staff members combine individual and group counseling to ensure that you receive high quality education and the latest principles of diabetes management. Registered dietitians work with you to determine a regimen that will help you control your diabetes. Meal plans are tailored to fit your needs, taking into consideration your lifestyle, work schedule and food preferences. This comprehensive program includes classes and individual sessions. One-on-one appointments are available.
University's Gestational Diabetes Program (diabetes during pregnancy) is a three-hour class taught by our Certified Diabetes Educators. Small class size and individualized meal plans make the learning specific to your own special needs. You will receive instruction on blood sugar testing, healthy eating, food label reading, exercise, and what you can do to help keep your blood sugars at a normal level during your pregnancy. Normal blood sugar levels are important for a healthy baby. Follow-up visits are included in the program so changes can be made in your meal plan and goals as needed. Learn more about how to decrease your future risk of type 2 diabetes, how gestational diabetes will effect future pregnancies, and what to expect after your delivery.
Certified Diabetes Educators can help you with many aspects of diabetes care, including:
