More than 76,000 patients annually choose to seek and receive care in the University Emergency Department. From treating heart attacks to severe infections, the Emergency Department is committed to providing the highest level of emergency care to the citizens and visitors of the Central Savannah River Area. A triage nurse will determine whether the Main Emergency Department Team or the Minor treatment Team will see you. For our younger patients, we also offer a Pediatric Emergency Department. Our comprehensive emergency services include:
Main Emergency Department
All 22 rooms in the Main Emergency Department are staffed and equipped to care for a variety of emergency medical conditions such as chest pain, heart attacks, stroke, respiratory issues or any other acute medical situation. Patients remain here until they are stabilized and a decision is made to admit them, send them home or refer them to their personal physicians’ offices. The Emergency Department works in a coordinated manner with University’s full range of diagnostic and treatment departments to provide the most comprehensive medical/surgical care possible.
Pediatric Emergency Department
Since children have very special physical and emotional needs, University's Pediatric Emergency Department is designed to delight and comfort our tiniest patients. Patients and their parents are greeted by "Jack," a toy Jack Russell Terrier that serves as the department's mascot. Jack can be seen peeping through fences or diving into ponds in the beautifully painted full-wall murals in each treatment room. Patients are taken to these rooms, which represent every season of the year, from the pediatric waiting room in the likeness of a tree house. Children up to age 17 may be seen in the Pediatric Emergency Department by board-certified pediatricians with emergency experience.
Minor Treatment
If you can’t be seen right away by your personal physician, yet you know your minor illness or injury doesn’t require emergency department treatment, University offers Minor Treatment. The Minor Treatment facility at the main hospital is an extension of the Emergency Services department, and a visit there is considered an emergency services visit by insurance carriers. If your condition turns out to be more serious, you still have the full resources of our Main Emergency Department. In either situation, you can count on getting the appropriate level of care.
Off Campus Urgent Care Option
Another Prompt Care/Occupational Health facility is located on the University Health Care System campus in Evans. However, a visit to Evans Prompt Care is considered the same as a visit to a physician’s office by insurance carriers.
