University's Surgery Care Center
University Hospital surgical patients will register in the Surgery Care Center on the hospital’s second floor. The center is conveniently located with access by a bridge to the second floor of the main parking deck and features 18 private pre-op rooms, and 2 holding bays for surgical patients. The new rooms provide additional privacy and confidentiality for patient care.
The new center also eliminates one step in the patient flow process and replaces the former AM Surgery and patient holding area on the first floor. (Day Surgery patients will continue to register in Professional Center 2.)
The Surgery Care Center is open Monday-Friday, 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 706/774-7660.
Surgery Waiting Room
Family members can remain close in the nearby Surgery Waiting Room and may visit until the patient goes to surgery. Only one family member will be permitted in the pre-op area while the patient is being prepared for surgery. The new waiting area overlooks the first floor atrium and features two consultation rooms where surgeons and family members may speak privately. The waiting area is staffed by University volunteers and offers many conveniences, including access to wireless internet service and lockers for family and patient valuables.
Operating Room Suites
The center also is connected to the hospital’s five spacious new surgical suites, designed to better accommodate surgical robotics and other emerging technologies. The suites feature high definition viewing monitors, ceiling-mounted equipment booms, access to digital radiology and the ability to control the surgical field from a single touch panel.
Day Surgery Center
Nationally, more than 20 million procedures are performed annually on an outpatient basis, made possible by tremendous technological advances and rapid-acting drugs and anesthetics that reduce surgery and recovery time. Patients having procedures performed through the Day Surgery Center are admitted first thing in the morning and discharged that afternoon to recover at home.
University’s Day Surgery Center-Main Campus is adjacent to the main hospital. It features five operating rooms, two day surgery minor rooms, a 10-bay recovery unit and 16 pre-operative recovery rooms. Click here for detailed instructions about your Day Surgery appointment.
Endoscopy
University has seven Endoscopy procedure rooms and 12 pre- and post-procedure bays designed to maximize patient privacy, comfort and dignity while providing state-of-the-art medical technology to assist in procedures. Specialized nurses remain at the bedside to assist with the procedure and provide care for the patient.
Endoscopy means to view with the aid of a scope. An endoscope is a flexible device in which modern fiber-optic technology enables the physician to look inside the gastrointestinal tract or lungs without making an incision. The device can make color photographs to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of various disorders of the digestive and pulmonary systems. Patients receive sedation during the procedure, which takes 15-60 minutes. University also offers:
Pillcam small bowel - The patient swallows a vitamin sized camera that takes pictures to aid the physician in diagnosing diseases of the small bowel.
Esophageal manometry- The Manoscan 360 is new in 2007 and is designed to assist the physician in diagnosing motor function problems from the pharynx to the stomach.
